Icebreaker: Main Screen
Context
Icebreaker (Rizz AI) is an AI dating app by Since Kindly, Inc. that helps users start conversations. I was the sole product designer on the app, owning the full user journey — including the moment this case is about: the main screen, where users generate and use an AI-written message.
Business Problem
People opened the main screen, generated one line, and stopped there. The product didn't show what else it could do, and low usage of generated messages was dragging retention down.
User Problem
A single-button screen explained nothing — no reason to come back if all it offered was one line.
Process
Designed 4 versions of the main screen: baseline (single button), "History + Examples" (with history and sample screenshots), "History + Benefits" (with history and benefit descriptions), and one demonstrating future functionality.
Ran a 7-day A/B test on live traffic.
Tracked the main_screen_view → generation → copied funnel per variant.
Shipped the winner — "History + Examples."
Achievements
19% → 28% (≈1.5×) with "History + Examples" — the best of 4 tested versions. The runner-up ("History + Benefits") hit 26.2%; the future-features preview landed around 12% and wasn't selected.
Outcome
Tested 4 versions of Icebreaker's main screen and shipped the winner, lifting AI-message usage by nearly 1.5×.
